‘After attending the ‘Ending Violence Towards Women and Girls’ conference, I felt compelled to create a body of work that challenges prevailing attitudes. While initiatives like self-defence classes and confidence-building workshops for women are valuable, they don't address the root causes of the issue. True change lies in transforming societal attitudes.’

Collaborations - ‘I truly believe in using creativity to cultivate change’

Banlaoch with Kilcooley Womens Centre.

The Kilcooley Womens Centre wanted to see more female representation in Bangor City Centre. We explored the comparison between Celtic goddesses and modern women particularly themes of strength, versatility, and the quest for respect and equality.

The Bears with the NI Childrens Hospice and The Tate

The painting, created in collaboration with the children at the Children’s Hospice, was initially set to be auctioned at the NI Hospice Gala. However, in an exciting development, The Tate Ward featured  the piece in their Urban and Contemporary Auction on the 19th of March.

About

Kate Whiteman is a mixed media artist based in Bangor, Northern Ireland, dedicated to exploring themes of femininity, resilience, and societal transformation through her work. By integrating materials such as concrete, rust, and textiles, she aims to juxtapose the traditionally "ugly" with the inherently beautiful, highlighting the strength and grace of the feminine spirit.

Her creative process is deeply intuitive, often beginning with spontaneous experimentation that evolves into layered compositions. This approach allows me to convey complex narratives and emotions, inviting viewers to engage with the work on multiple levels.
